The Art of Clay – Workshop

We welcome, and invite, those of you who would like the opportunity to participate in a sensorial and mutable journey of discovery with clay to participate in our workshops.

Pottery, the art of working with clay, is that of manipulating a live material. it excites the creativity in each of us. It allows us to encounter and reconnect with nature which is such an integral part of our existence. Working with clay permits us to breathe and explore an avenue to life that has been displaced in our modern world. Clay is our soil, air, water and fire! Over the years Viana do Alentejo has developed and enjoyed a long tradition with clay.

Programme

Saturday – 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
· The life of Clay - Kneading and preparation of clay for the pottery wheel. Initiation into the importance of water in this process.
· Exploration with the pottery wheel
· Working the pottery wheel while experimenting with design instruments, rolls and blocks

Saturday - 2.00pm to 7:00pm
· The life of Clay – The Process of finishing and drying
· Experimentation with the various qualities of clay
· Field trip in the local environment to explore textures and ideas for decoration.

Sunday - 9:00 to 1:00
· The life of Clay – The Finishing Touches, textures and polishing of the surfaces
· Experimentation with clay

Sunday – 2:00 to 5:00
· The life of Clay – The Final Touch
· Recycling clay
· Film session – The techniques of Clay

Note: Upon request, the completed pieces will be available after firing.

Meals

To complement your clay adventure we also invite you to learn about the wonderful food that the Alentejo has to offer. We will be providing lunch made with local and regional products.

Animação com Olaria

São actividades de cariz experimental que possibilitam às pessoas uma experiência directa com o barro e com o"saber-fazer" deste ofício mágico. Pretende-se desafiar o público a pôr mãos à obra e a fazer nascer uma caneca, um copo, uma taça, de um simples bocado de barro. Temos realizado estas iniciativas tanto para adultos como para crianças em feiras, jardins, festas aniversário, programas de team-building entre outros.
